Field Day is coming soon!

The FCC 97.1 describes amateur radio as:

A: A voluntary non-commercial communications service, particularly with respect to providing emergency communications

B: Continuing and extension the amateur’s proven ability to contribute to the advancement of the radio art

C: Encouragement and improvement of the amateur service through rules which provide for advancing skills both in the communications and technical phases of the art

D: Expansion of the existing reservoir within the amateur radio service of trained operators, technicians and electronic experts

E: Continuation and extension of the amateur’s unique ability to enhance international goodwill

What does all that have to do with Field Day?

One of the key elements of Field Day is exposing Amateur Radio to the public.  In fact, Field Day is our BEST opportunity to show off how effective we can be in an emergency.  By now you’re thinking yes Brian, we know all that.  The point of this month’s column is to ask for YOUR help inviting your friends and neighbors to experience the North Shore Radio Club Field Day.  We will be operating at Clarkson Park in Northfield from 1pm on Saturday June 27 through 1pm on Sunday June 28. Please invite your neighbors and friends and feel free to copy and distribute our Field Day flyer which can be found on the club website (and included in this e-mail), or from me via email, or from our Field Day leaders.

As a club we always “score” well in this “not a contest” event.  Seriously we will be operating CW, SSB and GOTA (get on the air) stations. Set up of the radios and antennas begins on Friday afternoon and like raising a child, it takes a village.  Please contact any of our Field Day leaders and offer to assist with set-up, tear-down, and operating the radios.

Our leaders this year are:

Alwin Brunner - W9APB, Udo Koch - N0LSR, Jay Williams - W8JAY, and Brian Nolan - KD9RFW.  Their contact info is on our club website.

Of note is a new Food Chairman, Brian Nolan KD9RFW, who promises gourmet dining from world famous local establishments!  (Portillo’s, Lou Malnati’s and Dunkin)

But that’s not all we have going on this year.  We have the very popular Fox Hunt on Tuesday July 14th and QRP Night on Tuesday September 8th.

As always up to date club information and event details are available 24/7 on the club website https://ns9rc.org/
