March 2020

From the Desk of KR9T

Don, KK9H recently called my attention to an article on why ham clubs are dying (www.eham.net/article/42959).  Essentially it pointed to eight factors that can keep our club healthy.

1.      Have Fun

2.      Give your members what they want

3.      Promote Fellowship

4.      Recruit new members

5.      Tap into the talent of your club

6.      Have a good newsletter

7.      Social media

8.      Staying Active

As I reflected on these factors, we appear to possess every one of these elements and maybe that is why our club continues to grow and thrive.  We have introduced a summertime Hams in the Park, at least one social event (Lou Malnatis), interesting and educational monthly club programs, a reinvigorated Build Club, Saturday Morning Breakfast Club, Monthly VE examinations, a new (as of May 30th) ham radio station at the Northbrook Public Library, antenna raising parties, the monthly eMitter, a Facebook presence, and many public service projects ranging from the Chicago Marathon to the Evanston 100 Bike Event.  Our current calendar of events has activities every month.

Members can be as active and involved as they wish to be.  We continue to recruit talent from within to help with the varied events we conduct and participate in.  Volunteer forms are available at every club meeting or just contact me if you want to become more involved.

If there is something you think we could be doing to make things even better, just let me know.  We thrive on your input.

Spring brings with it an awakening of our desire to get antennas erected, and to get involved in Springtime activities such Earth and Arbor Day coming in April at the Northbrook Village Green, erecting an antenna for our Northbrook Library Ham Station, and looking forward to planning Field Day.  Again, this is your club and we welcome your ideas and participation to make our club welcoming to all.

  73,

Burt KR9T
