Dog Days

The Dog Days of Summer are upon us and with them come the excitement of getting the gang back together again,  We have already had two in-person events (the Hams-in-the-Park and the Fox Hunt), but now we finally get to collectively meet at the Heller Nature Center for our first in a long time club monthly meeting.  Of course, things remain a little “iffy” with the Covid variants causing a bit of concern.  But we will follow whatever guidelines that the Highland Park District sets for Heller and will strictly enforce it.  So, stay tuned for further developments.

Last month I asked for members who were able to step up and volunteer for positions on the Board and for other committee assignments.  I appreciate those who stepped forward and volunteered to help.  Our club runs on the good will and spirit of public service of our members.  But we still have many positions to fill and assignments to make.  So if you haven’t already volunteered, please help us if you can by sending a note to me at KR9T@arrl.net.  Also, Rob, K9RST has put out a request for assistance for the Evanston Bike Race in September and the Chicago Marathon in October.  Please contact him directly to help out in these two high visibility public service events.  The club is counting on you.

As we move toward Fall, our calendar is filling up with events.  Our Build Club is developing an ambitious set of build projects and if past projects are any indication, these new ones should be fun and challenging to all our members, no matter what their skill level.

I am happy to report that our club is seeing a significant rise in membership, including some very inspiring youthful members.  Please take the time to introduce yourself to them at our upcoming meetings and events.  These folks represent our future. They are eager to learn and will be fun to mentor.

Our VE sessions are now regularly scheduled each month back at the Northbrook Public Library. With the implementation of our computerized testing process, applicants can now receive their call signs, upon successfully passing their FCC exams, in one-two days, as opposed the seeks it use to take.  Thanks to Rich, K9RD and Cary, KD9ITO for making this such a successful program.

I look forward to meeting all of our new members in future Heller meetings and reconnecting with our long-time members once again.  Till next time. Keep making those contacts.

 73,

Burt KR9T
